Improving the Avery hand dimpler


The Avery hand dimpler is a very useful tool, but it has a couple of drawbacks.

1. PROBLEM - The dimpler dies have a large enough diameter that in many cases you will crease the bend in a rib if the hole to be dimpled is close to the web of the rib.

SOLUTION - Grind down the outer radius of the dies as shown in the pictures below.


2. PROBLEM - When dimpling, the Vise Grip frame will frequently lock in the closed position and not spring back open. This forces you to stop your operation and release the Vise Grip. The large force required to unlock the tool can be a real pain.

SOLUTION - Use a 10-32 machine screw to lock the release lever in the "release" position. This prevents the Vise Grip from locking and it will always spring open at the end of a dimple operation. Because of this modification, this tool is now my fastest and easiest dimpling method. (see picture below)
