The Paint Process

12-11-01
With the help of Eric Mann, owner of Freedom Graphics in Reno, NV, here is a possible paint scheme for the RV-7. The stars represent the constellation Pleiades, which is the Subaru company logo. The blue and yellow colors are the Subaru rally race colors.

Parts of the plane have been receiving primer for some time. Now I have hit the inevitable - I have to spray some real paint on this thing. Not on the outside quite yet, but in the cabin. It's time for various controls and systems to be installed permanently inside the cabin. But first the cabin must have its coat of paint. First I removed everything that could be removed from the inside of the cabin. Then I applied a coat of Dupont VariPrime primer to the cabin. Over this went a thick coat of gray Dupont Imron 5000. I shot the primer with a cheap touch-up gun from Home Depot. The Imron was shot with a Sata HVLP professional spray gun. The quality of atomization out of the Sata gun is nothing short of amazing. Now cabin components and systems can go back in for the last time.

The exterior paint is finally being applied. The prep work has taken quite a bit of time. The wing tips have been painted yellow and the flaps have been painted blue. Most of the smaller parts should have color on them within a week.

6-2-03
The fuse was painted today. Color sanding and polishing is progressing well on all the small parts.

6-5-03
The tail has been mated to the fuse (for the last time). The elevators have been balanced. In a couple of days the wing paint will be done and the rest of the plane can be assembled :)

Here is the fully painted result. Fiberglass, prep and paint took 400 hours of labor.
