Horizontal Stabilizer

8-15-01
Here are the humble beginnings of the horizontal stabilizer. The rear spar is finished. The parts of the rear spar fell together with little contemplation. Here the front spar is taking shape. The front spar is taking a little more head scatching and plans re-reading to get it right.

Slowly she goes....inch by inch......step by step. The skeleton of the horizontal stabilizer starts to come together.

8-22-01
The horizontal stabilizer skeleton is finished. Time to start fitting the skins.

8-23-01
The skeleton has been fixtured to the work table to make sure it is square and flat (no twist). This is the only fixturing I have done to this point. I decided not to build the large assembly jig suggested by Van's after reading comments by builders about how easily these new kits go together. So far they have been right - the pieces are falling right in place with no "adjustments" to the kit. The next step is to drill the skins to the ribs.

8-27-01
After some drilling, deburring, dimpling, and riveting, the horizontal stabilizer is finished. Now all I need is a plane to go with it and we can go have some fun.
